Curiously, the most difficult match in Nottingham Forest's cup run in 1959 was against the semi-professionals from Tooting & Mitcham United, yet the weakest team faced by the club. Forest continued their path by eliminating Grimsby Town, Birmingham City after two replays, Bolton Wanderers, and then Aston Villa in the semi-finals.

At Wembley, their opponent was Luton Town, another Division One club, and Forest made the best possible start by scoring two goals in the first 14 minutes. The first was scored by winger Roy Dwight, who joined from Fulham at the start of the season for a significant amount, before center forward Tommy Wilson quickly added the second.

Dwight's leg break before halftime left Forest with ten players. Although Luton reduced the gap in the second half, the Nottingham club held on to win the competition for the first time in 51 years and only the second time in its history.
